The narcissist feels the need to have a lot of attention, adulation and admiration from others. However, people with this severe disorder, without realizing it, will display their negative characteristics to the outside world and confess their superiority through their actions and attitudes. This is a rude awakening for the narcissist and at this point, he/she will realize what's going on. As a result, the ironic life the narcissist leads acquires a new dimension, namely "hate of self. When such people examine the cause of this hate, they conclude that their disorder is caused by the outside world, and they get drawn further to the self they hate. The outside world won't satisfy them because there's no another "self" there. Resulting loneliness and introversion will lead to increasing love towards self and become a vicious-circle.
"There is not narcissism and non-narcissism. There are narcissisms that are more or less comprehensive, generous, open and extended. What is called non-narcissism is in general but the economy of a much more welcoming and hospitable narcissism. One that is much more open to the experience of the Other as Other. I believe that without a movement of narcissistic reappropriation the relation to the other would be absolutely destroyed. It would be destroyed in advance. The relation to the Other, even if it remains asymmetrical open, without possible reappropriation must trace a movement of reappropriation in the image of one's self for love to be possible. Love is narcissistic."
-Jacques Derrida, Points, 1992
